We ask for a minimum of 2 hours per consultation and if we are required to travel out of the Ithaca area we will negotiate the cost of travel. We offer various levels of detail, depending on what you're looking for. It's really up to you.
We could meet you on some land where you have permission to go and freely harvest plants. This can be your own garden or the garden of your workplace, a local forest where you have a permit to pick...pretty much anywhere, as long as you have permission to be there (we don't want to encourage people to wander on land where they could get themselves into trouble). There is no limit to how many participants come on this type of consultation.
Alternatively, we can show you around a piece of land where we have permission to pick and introduce you to some of the wild plants we use and supply. Please note that this option is limited to three participants at a time.
A consultation can function simply like a personalized wild food tour of the land. Some of our customers simply want to be wowed by the abundance and variety of edible plants in their home which is a great way of opening the door to wild food (be warned that the door will never close again!).
For people with an interest in increasing the food production on their land (farmers, gardeners etc.), this can be a way of finding greater productivity through plants that are growing of their own accord. We can also discuss and demonstrate how to harvest and prepare the plants for the purpose of sale or use in a kitchen, including preservation. We are happy to cook with you in a kitchen to demonstrate ways to make the foods accessible and delicious.
A consultation can also function as a way to get to know the edible plants on your land in great detail. We can come to visit as many times as you like through the year (up to one occasion per week).
We can produce a digital document with images and text about key points of identification as well as some basic culinary uses. If you wish this document can include a map of the significant plant populations found on your land. This might inform decisions regarding land management activities to preserve or remove certain plants or it could simply serve as a reminder of what to be looking for in certain locations.
